On Twitter and Community (oh, and unicorndogs)

atsween:

Just a brief excerpt:

I have formed more and more relationships with people on Twitter, and some of those relationships are showing clear signs of strengthening. Why shouldn’t they? In some ways Twitter acts as a gradually established eHarmony of friendships. We begin to learn more and more about one another, and naturally gravitate toward people with whom we share a connection for whatever reason. I have met people on Twitter that make me curse the geographic distances that separate us, and people that clearly relate to me and I to them. I have cared about tweeps after years of blocking the same types of reactions and connections in real life for many different reasons. I think the largest contributor to that strange fact is the equally surprising fact that even with sometimes total anonymity, Twitter users have been NICE. Even though we don’t have to, we’re being more civil, compassionate and friendly than I think many of us have reason to expect from one another, ESPECIALLY since many of our new Twitter friends come from backgrounds, cultures, experiences and belief systems far different than our own. This fact above all others is an amazing testament to the human condition, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The media would have us believe that we are all a danger to one another and that the world is falling apart around us. Sure the sample size I am describing is limited and tailored, but I still have yet to see even close to a substantial amount of bitterness, or menacing or any of the other negative human traits that I think most of us expect from one another.

Just go read it. This is why I twitter.

Yes! Well said, guys. Better than I did, but hey, might as well link to what I wrote on this very subject…
